Fostering peace with brooms and mentality: Federsee Youth Camp 2025

The MMB Foundation has been supporting the youth and educational work of the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e. V. for many years in Baden-Württemberg – with an emphasis on raising young people’s awareness of peace, responsibility and a culture of remembrance.

A key project is the Federsee Youth Camp, which has been bringing together young people from Upper Swabia for over 60 years. Annual work camps are held at different locations across Europe focused on maintaining German war graves while actively engaging with the consequences of war, the importance of reconciliation and the value of a peaceful Europe.

In the summer of 2025, the group travelled to Ljubljana and Zagreb. In the Slovenian capital, the young people tended WWII war graves; in Zagreb they cleaned more than 650 gravestones, digitally recorded the names and cleared overgrown commemorative slabs.

A special moment was the memorial service to mark the end of the work camp, during which the German ambassador symbolically added the Croatian flag to the “Band of Nations.” A symbol of growing European coexistence.

Through its continuous support, the MMB Foundation gives young people the opportunity to gain these significant experiences while learning why peace is not a given but a mentality that needs to be nurtured.
